Asbestos Awareness Training

Course Content

Foresight Safety Asbestos Awareness Training is designed to give participants an understanding of the potential hazards and risks associated with asbestos-containing materials (ACMs). It also provides a clear overview of the legal requirements that help employees protect themselves and others while at work.

Awareness training should be provided to employees whose work may reasonably disturb a building’s fabric and expose them to ACMs, as well as to those who supervise or influence such work. In particular, this training should be provided to workers in refurbishment, maintenance, and related trades where ACMs may reasonably be exposed during their work.

Foresight Safety awareness training covers the following topics aligned with the training requirements of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012:

• The properties of asbestos and its effects on health, including the increased risk of lung cancer for workers who smoke
• The types, uses and likely occurrence of ACMs in buildings and plant
• The general procedures to be followed to deal with an emergency, e.g. an uncontrolled release of asbestos dust into the workplace
• How to avoid the risks from asbestos, e.g. for building work, no employee should carry out work which disturbs the fabric of a building unless the employer has confirmed that ACMs are not present.

Awareness training will not prepare employees or self-employed contractors to carry out work with ACMs. Awareness training is only intended to help employees avoid carrying out work that will disturb asbestos or ACMs. If work is planned that will disturb ACMs, further information, instruction and training appropriate to the work being done will be needed.

Training Duration

3 hours (includes the time allocated for assessment)

Assessment

Attainment of the learning outcomes will be assessed by a multiple-choice examination consisting of 20 questions and completed under formal exam conditions. Learners must achieve a minimum score of 16 out of 20 (80%) to pass.

Certification

On successful completion of the assessment attendees will be issued with a pass certificate valid for 3 years.
